Happy Birthday to the First Child

Poverty is always experienced in the soul
before it is felt in the pocketbook.

                    Sarah Ban Breathnach
                    Simple Abundance

Children are our legacy. My life
is rich because I've been forever
blessed to share it with
extraordinary individuals.

My legacy was planted 29 years ago
with the birth of my first child.

Happy Birthday to an Old Soul

For as I like a young man in whom there is something of the old,
so I like an old man in whom there is something of the young.

Betty's Pie Whole

Inside Sunshine Garden is Betty's Pie Whole.

Yeah, its that good.  Sweet and
savory pies.  We ordered one
of each, all good.  My favorites
were the meatball (turkey), key lime
and strawberry rhubarb.

Happy Birthday, Joe

I've been watching the Golden Girls all morning.
It reminds me of the days when Joe and I were still
living with our parents.  Joe is like an onion,
he has many layers, and remembers better than I do.

He recalls the good and bad in vivid detail while my memories
are fuzzy.  He remembers what places looked
like, where we bought things, and how people made him feel.
There is a great distance between where we live but
no distance in our hearts. We try to comunicate daily.

I remember some things, like we used
to shop at the Safeway in Pacifica, I always remind
Mr. Lee when we have the
occasion to drive by during our road trips.
The shopping center across the street
from the former Safeway, had a Grant City, and a Ross.
In those days, Grant City was the only variety store and
Ross was a fancy store, not the messy
discount store of today.

Even then in the early 70s, Joe and I loved magazines,
we would beg our mother to buy the kid's magazines.
We'd promise to never ever ask for anything ever again.
As I recall, Mother also bought the family
sewing machine at Grant City.

In the early 80s, there were winter evenings laced
with Rum Raisin Hagan Daz ice cream,
popcorn popped in a covered pot with oil and salt,
and citrusy 7-up to drink. Before the worries of climate
change, fog sheltered the coastside,
there were great thunder and lightening storms
and sunshine was rare.

As kids, we weren't thrilled with the
practice of birthday gifts of pajamas, foundation garments
(underwear) or socks but would give our
eye teeth to have someone buy those things
for us now. Of our five kids, four were born between
December  6th and the end of January with
Christmas sandwiched in between. We understood
our parents worked hard and there was no money
to waste or as Ricky Richardo would say: extravagances.

We felt safe in the warm as toast duplex
on Mill Street. We weren't allowed to eat
in the living room but would pull two
dinette chairs to the doorway of the kitchen
to watch TV.

Innocent memories.  Learning to speak
English with I Love Lucy, dancing, behind the
the brown plaid sofa from Levitz, with the
Lawrence Welk show, and
watching the Mary Tyler Moore Show.
Good times.

On MTM, Betty White played the slut and Georgia Engel
played the ditzy blonde.

It wasn't like today, with a TVin nearly every room,
we shared one TV, a Zenith, with
the entire family and no remote control.

That's me, posing with the TV in the family room of
424 Purisima.  Notice the "footballer".  He must have
been lost when we moved to Mill Street.

Below, our niece, Christine, celebrates her birthday at
the kitchen dinette table. Those are the chairs Joe and I
would jam into the kitchen doorway when we wanted
to eat and watch TV.

Growing up, we always had some kind of white curtains
in the kitchen.  I really like the ones shown here: sheer
with dingle balls. Mother make sure the windows
sparkled like diamonds and no one had brighter whites.
Our fondness for variety stores and thrifting
was sparked during this period. Mother didn't
buy second hand initially, she had enough
of it growing up, but later, in her golden years
she shared the hunt with us.

Happy Birthday, Joe, here's to making many
many more. To chocolate, books, magazines,
old and new TV series, thrift stores, and cups
of soul strengthening tea.

Thank you for remembering for the two of
 us.

Heart to Heart

Sweet are the uses of
adversity;
Which, like the toad,
ugly and venomous,
Wears yet a precious jewel
in his head....
                             William Shakespeare

Ah, Happy Birthday to the
most precious jewel.
My best friend and
partner.

All our experiences,
we do not regret, my love,
because they have brought
us to this moment.

Day 8: Happy Birthday, Mother

Happy Birthday, Mother.
Mother loved birthdays
and simple gifts.  She was happy just
to be surrounded by her children and grandchildren.

When we were sick we longed for her.
No matter the distance she came to
care for us.

Mother, You cast a giant shadow.
We will never forget you.

I have found
the paradox,
that if you love

until it hurts,
there can be no more hurt,
only MORE love.

               Mother Teresa

Oh, how I wish she were still with me.

In the last months of her life,
I would sit for hours holding her
hand. I thought I knew, how much
I would miss her touch, her healing
power, and her compassion, but I only
knew a little.

Happy Belated Birthday, Dulce

Four of the five of us were born
in a clump.  Two in December and
two in January with my oldest brother
in May.   Dulce rounds out the
birthday bash at the end of January.

My sister, Dulce is perfectly named.
She is the sweetest of us five kids.
She is the most obedient of us all.

While I broke boundaries and voiced
everything.  Dulce was quiet and careful
with her feelings and words.

The photo above is one of my most favorites.
Dulce and our mother chatting it up here at Pumpkin Cottage.
My mother's look of  pure satisfaction still brings the flow of tears.
She was looking at me brandishing the camera
but relishing the time with her remaining
daughters.

Doing what we often did once all the women's
work was done. Chatting while we crafted.

My sister's bright blue eyes,
dark brown hair and
perfectly rosey peaches and cream skin did not give
away her strong will or her tender heart.

Dulce loved the outside, the care of the
small farm animals and the kitchen garden.

All of us girls have carried the burden of
a chronic illness
with a glad and thankful heart.

Happy Birthday, dearest sister.

Happy Birthday Big Brother

Deep in their roots, all flowers keep the light.

                                      Theodore Roethke

My brother holds the light.
He keeps the light deep.
Unable to accept the joy.
The joy he makes and the the joy
he is given.

Be gracious today and accept your
worthiness.
Don't fight the wave but surrender.
Surrender.  Allow the warmth of
unconditional love to encompass
your being.
Laugh, sing and eat well.

Allow all who are near to love you.
Submit to kindness.
Nothing necessary in return.
No score keeping.

We understand and accept the
tenderness of your heart.

Oxalá,  que este dia repita por muitos anos.

Happy Birthday.

What to do on my milestone birthday?
Craft, eat and play with these guys.

There's only a few things I ever
wanted to be: a teacher and an actress.
Being a mother has allowed

Remembering Mericia

Happy Birthday, Mericia.
Oh, to have been blessed by grace.

My own understanding wasn't broad
enough to accept the witnessing of grace.
Grace: what we receive but don't deserve.

My oldest sister was one month shy of her 45th
birthday when she passed away.  It has been
over twenty years, still I recall the blue
of her soulful eyes, the depth of her faith, and
the strength of her will.

Our family: Mother and Prima Texeira. Mericia (in bandana), Dulce.
Joe, me and my other brother, Ilidio.  Rare occasion when all the
siblings were together.

Mericia, in the middle in blue.

What a beauty.

My witness of her silent suffering,
built strength and resolve in my heart.
I knew if confronted with my own pain and suffering
I would want to stand as a testament as she did.

Missing you today.
May you continue to rest in peace my
beloved.

Happy Birthday

Happy Birthday, Nicholas Joshua.
Nicholas because my oldest sister,
Mericia was born on St. Nicholas Day.
She was very sick when Nicholas was born.
Joshua because it means Jesus in Hebrew.

Nicholas was fragile,  born  a month early
at 5 lbs 2 oz, he was a tiny peanut.
The pediatrician said he may not make it
through his first night.
I thought go f*** yourself doc.

Twenty-four candles.
He was born to serve.
Proudly serving in the U.S. Army.

We have been estranged for nearly 10 years.
An ugly divorce and an ex-Mr. Wonderful.
I know, there are murderers out there lucky
enough to be visited by their children.

I am sad to say I may not recognize
my own child on the street.
It's a hard thing to be a mother.

He is in my daily thoughts and prayers.

Be blessed my darling.
Happy Birthday.

Dear Mother - Querida Mãe

All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.
                    Abraham Lincoln

Missing you dearly.
Happy Birthday, Mother.
How I wish we could plant
white pansies (amor perfeitos - perfect loves)
together today.

Pansies were among my mother's
favorite flowers, not the tiny johnny jump ups variety,
but the large faced old fashioned pansies
with their charming smiley faces.
I'll plant white pansies with purple faces
today to commemorate her 86th birthday.
Just me, in solitude, out in the garden
dirt where I can carry on a conversation.

I didn't know it, but the old house at 424 Purisima
had everything I needed
to fill my heart for a lifetime.
While I searched and peace alluded me,
the peace my soul desired was already
within me.

A large garden with an apple and plum tree.
Shasta daisies (margaridas),
fuchsias, roses (rosas), camellias (japonicas),
geraniums (solteiras), and
hydrangeas (hortencias).
I learned their Portuguese common names first.

My mother would garden by the light of the moon while
she cared for father in late stage Alzheimer's.  Her garden
was among the most beautiful of cottage gardens.
The flowers so loved, they lifted their heads to listen
to the outpouring of my mother's heart, to kiss
the sunshine and the water so lovingly provided.

My parents in the backyard at 424 Purisima

My father and me in the parlor at 424 Purisima. Always smiling.

Happiness All Around

The years are ticking away.

Best Friends.

Play is hard work.
Necessary to develop character.
Laugh through the hurt.
That's Holly at the bottom of the pile.
Laughing.

Pinata time.
Learning to move through periods of
darkness.  Preparing for years of
standing in line patiently.

That's Jodi patiently reading Holly's birthday cards.
Without Jodi I don't think I could have
survived Holly's pregnancy.  We commuted to
and from work on the train.  Jodi carried
my backpack and walked me to our shuttle bus.
She encouraged and cheered me on.
When you don't think the Lord
is listening look around.

Pumpkin Cottage.

Nothing is better than having those
who love and support you
around you in times of difficulty and joy.

There's nothing you can do
that's more important than
being fulfilled.

Parabens, Dulce Maria

Happy Birthday sweet sister.

My paternal grandmother, Ursula Adelaide Felix,
was a school teacher, born in Massachusetts
in December of 1900.
I suspect she had a hand in naming
both my sister, Dulce and brother, Ilidio.

Dulce's name originated in Don Quixote.

Dulcinea (dool-see-NAY-ah) was a name created by
Cervantes's "Don Quixote" for his idealized lady.
Dulce is the sweet obedient sibling.

Happy Birthday.

Uncle Joe Could Live Here

Uncle Joe is an official member of the Getalong Gang.
I don't recall a time without him.

He often joins us on our Road Trip adventures.

Ditched the little sister so much happier.

When he is not reading, he may murmur,
"I could live here."
There used to be more conviction in his voice but
it has become a running gag.

Our mother left me some amazing photos.

Little voices can often be heard,
even if Uncle Joe hasn't joined us,
joining in with sweet sincerity,
"Uncle Joe could live here."

Ah the 80s.

Uncle Joe, has always been the caboose.
The last one in the car with shoes and socks
still in hand.
We literally drag him with us, but
always there is great fun.

BTW, on our last trip to Visalia, we
spied a great mobile home park.
Yes, Uncle Joe could live there.

Happy Birthday and many more.

Happy Birthday, Soldier

Holidays and birthdays are always hard.
I haven't  seen or talked to my second son,
Nicholas since he was 14.  I send
unanswered notes and cards.
Nicholas, turns
23 today, he is serving in the
US Army.

As I prepared to write this post
I prayed.  My shameful disclosure is
shared here to possibly help
another estranged parent.

There is help and we are not
alone, today I found Daily Strength Groups
Parents of Estranged Adult
Children.  My own estrangement was
collateral damage of an ugly divorce.
The legal
system is just that, a legal system,
not a justice system.
The one with the most money wins.

One son chose to live with us and the
other with his father.  The child we
raised has a relationship with his father
and extended family.  We encouraged him
to maintain relationships and remind him
of birthdays, father's day and other
important dates.  These simple acts
of kindness are not
reciprocated.

We have missed out on a child
growing into a man and all
the details of his life.

I stood at his high school graduation
uninvited. No invitation, no graduation
pictures.  Nothing.
It's the pay back forever.
Daily prayer is sent his way.
Soften his heart, Lord.
Whisper forgiveness and peace.
Open his eyes, Sweet Jesus.

Happy Birthday, my precious child.
May you stay safe.
Live your dreams.
Be blessed, Mom.
