An amazing paradox is that it is
easier to be courageous than to be a
coward. Once you get over the initial
fear of plunging into the unknown, with all its
dangerous snake traps, the mere fact
that you dared to face a hard decision becomes
your ally.

The Blog Community
It all started in 1987, the year I became a mom for the first time.
A lonely isolated time, I was away from home without the
support of family and friends. True I had a beautiful, healthy,
happy precious baby which is the greatest thing. Still, I yearned for
a bosom pal to share the adventure.
Our little family lived in a bedroom community,
where people spend the night, but
work elsewhere each week day.
My husband, at the time, commuted a long
distance, and otherwise, constantly traveled for work.
He was home on weekends and that was a
blessing but the rest of the time our gang of
three was alone.
It was the three of us at home: a baby
boy; an American Cocker, named Redd
Button Lucille; and me. Totally unsupervised.
My heart was starved to female companionship.
There were the occasional jaunts to antique fairs,
there was the monthly American Country Living magazine,
and eventually, there was, Susan Branch.
There was I Love Lucy, the reruns I have
been watching since the age of 4, and never grew tired.
There were movies, Anne of Green Gables,
is still a favorite, and books to keep me company.
Eventually, I returned to work outside the home
and make a few friends. I am blessed to still hold some dear.
Flash forward to 2007, my fourth child
and only girl is born. Instead of feeling isolated,
this time, I found a community of women in bloggyland.
Women who had similar interests. Homemakers,
artists, crafters, women who thrifted and enjoyed
vintage things. Women who gardened, read books,
cooked, watched BBC, enjoyed old movies, and
journaled in their Bibles.
It was like falling through the rabbit hole to
a wonderland. Alicia Paulson was the very first blog
I followed. She speaks to my homemaker heart.
Susan Branch inspires. I have each of her books,
she values girlfriends, homemaking, family and
kitties.
After the birth of my last child, my coworkers
feared I would not return to work.
Honestly, if I could have been creative enough to
develop another means of income...
I would have stayed home with these two.

An Authentic Journey
Today I want you to become aware that you already possess
all the inner wisdom, strength and creativity needed to make
your dreams come true.
Sarah Ban Breathnach
Simple Abundance 1995
For more than twenty years, I have traveled the Simple
Abundance journey. I never tire of the journey
because each year I discover nuggets of truth. Maybe as
I get older, I am more accepting of the reality before me.
Before Sarah Ban Breathnach
and I traveled together with Simple Abundance,
we shared another journey with a book she penned:
Mrs. Sharp's Traditions:
Reviving Victorian Family Celebrations of Comfort and Joy.
In the early 90s, I was a stay-at-home mom raising
two little boys. My husband, at the time, traveled extensively
for work. The isolation I felt was related to his travel was really
related to an emotional ocean between us. I walked on eggs shells
because I felt my emotional need was too great. My desire for intimacy
in the marriage relationship and a creative outlet was suffocating.
My family and close friends were far away. Southern California
culture was foreign. People from all over the world work and live
in Southern California but their stay is temporary. I accept the
superficial nature, even admire the autonomy, I rarely run
into anyone I know, but it taken 30 years.
Their roots, like mine, for the most part, aren't here.
There were other stay-at-home mothers in my neighborhood
but they were older and more sophisticated. They weren't interested in
the domestic arts or gardening. For the most part, they had housekeepers,
nannies, and gardeners. This was a desolate time for me.
I was a homemaker in my mid-20s, I didn't "do lunch"
or play golf. What I wanted to do was play with my boys,
plant a garden, make mud pie messes, decorate and bake cookies
with my children, visit used book and furniture stores. Mostly
I wanted to create but I didn't know it. My badges of honor
were an accidental green food coloring stain on the kitchen
wood floor and a pantry where I sponge painted, stenciled
teapots, and added the words...Happiness is in the journey.
They were private attempts of quietly comforting my authentic self.
From 1990 - mid 1995, I tried to satisfy the desires
of my soul by attending creative classes at every
venue I could find. There was sewing, embriodery,
rug hooking, jewelry making, cooking, canning,
tole painting, and quilting. But just as I was making
like minded friends, my days of watching Oprah
and putting the roast in the oven at 3:00 pm were numbered.
In May of 1995, as the result of the economic downturn,
I returned to work out of necessity. This was the same
year my boss gave me Susan Branch's Christmas from
the Heart of the Home.
But it wasn't until 2007, while on maternity leave with
my fourth and last child, that I discovered world of
blogs of creative community filled with like minded
women. Although much younger than me,
these women had desires similar to those I
had so many years before and they
were thriving in creative lives.
Yes, everything you need is already in you.
It was there all along.

Keep your Eyes Open
One must never stop living because of a storm.
Carolyn Rubenstein
from the book Desire to Inspire
Oh yeah, there have been times when
my compulsion was to simply fall off the face of
the Earth.
But when my eyes are wide open, I see the diversity
and charm of other human beings. I get a sense to
keep heading in the same direction. A nod, a peace over
me. Everything will be all right.
In Riverside, a town of over 300,000, we never
run into anyone we know. But occasionally, when
God knows you need a push of faith, He places
someone in your path...the experience is to let you
know everything will be all right.
Everything will be all right.

But Betsie put a finger on my mouth.
"Don't say it, Corrie! There are no 'ifs'

Sheros
Mary Randolph Carter, oh how I have loved you from a far.
Authentic, family, and a love affair with her husband.
As she speaks of her mother her voice catches,
ahhh, my eyes well with my own understanding.
Click on the link under her name and see for yourself.
There are times when the contents of
Pumpkin Cottage overwhelm visitors.
But for me it brings inspiration, my mind bounces, and
creativity blooms.
If you watch the video, look for a Shari Elf portrait.
We've gone to visit Shari's World Famous
Crochet Museum, then to celebrate with music
and art at the Art Queen.
Shari is genuine and lovely.
Carter's latest book, Never Stop to Think
Do I Have a Place for This?
If you stripped my rooms, tabletops, walls and floors
of all the things I have yearned for and collected
over the last fifty years, and left just the thing that were
required to survive, I am quite sure I would shrivel up and
die.
Kindred spirits always find each other.

When Mr. Lee and I started dating we had
a teeny tiny difference of opinion.
Mr. Lee called my acrylic paints "craft"
paints in a condescending voice.
In my heart I was a homemaker
who needed to craft.
Oh yes, I worked outside the home
but that didn't define me or bring
the satisfaction of crafting.
Reading about crafting and crafters
is almost as satisfying.
Embroiders' art and book.
The book Hoopla, by Leanne Prain
Mr. Lee's comment was a put down.
Definitely, a put down.
True Mr. Lee is the
artist but I get
more crafting done, because
without the meditative qualities
of making stuff my soul
would wither.
