What does true love look like?

"Sometimes our light goes out but is blown
into flame by another human being
Each of us owes deepest thanks to those
who have rekindled this light."

Mr. Lee was sharing that he had
overheard someone say, "If you are lucky,
you will spend 18 summers with your
children."

My mother would say, "The best time
of your life is when your children are little."
This precious time is like youth lost on the young.

We want to make the most of it,
each and every moment.
Summer is wrapping up.  The Get-Along-Gang
always tries to have a transition week
from summer to fall.

Unlike most of the parents we know,
we are not excited to have school start.
The beginning of school marks the
beginning of strict bed times, homework
obligations, and darkness at dinner time.

We've done this before and
understand time is fleeting.

Portugal

The 17th century Portuguese writer, Antonio Vieira wrote, "God gave the Portuguese a small country as a cradle but all the world as their grave."

Holy Ghost Festivities

This photo is a jewel among my mother's collection of photos.
It is a quintessential symbol of the Portuguese Holy Ghost Festivals
held throughout California and in my island of Pico, Azores.

The women join the traditional parade, carrying their baskets as you see here.
The baskets carry the homemade special occasion
bread: Bolo de vesperas.  Notice the handmade lace that decorates
the linens in each basket.

My mother would say that these women had hands of gold.
Hands that could make any thing and made everything with
perfection.
